New Zealand Public Land Fly-In Hunts
New Zealand public land hunting is world unto itself! It isn't the high-fence circus you've seen in outfitter brochures. It's a battle with The Bush. The Scrub. It's all about hard yakka and good keen men.
The Southern Alps are big and mean. They're cloaked in ridiculous foliage: Matagouri, Bush Lawyer, Spaniard, Beech, Dracophyllum. Like a thousand warriors, these plants guard the gate to the alpine. To get there, you must fight them! Locals refer to the bush as, "The Tiger Jungle." It's fitting. It'll rip you up and spit you out. But, for those who can hack it, the rewards are great: red stag, Himilayan tahr, and chamois in one of the most iconic and beautiful mountain ranges on earth. The real New Zealand is a backcountry mountain hunter's paradise!
Our local partner is a Native Kiwi and an accomplished mountain hunter operating throughout the public land regions of the South Island. He cut his teeth in the outfitting industry guiding with us here in the Flat Tops on OTC wilderness elk hunts. His backcountry guiding expertise is second-to-none, as is his passion for sharing his homeland and its unique hunting opportunities with international clients. You'll also be joined by a US host from our staff. The extra set of hands, legs, and optics is invaluable on these gritty alpine hunts.
These hunts are true public land offerings not unlike our Colorado wilderness hunts. The experience is raw and extraordinary. Helicopter transport is included in the trip fee, but hunters should still be in peak physical condition and prepared for a rigorous backpack-style hunt. The region allows us to target multiple species (red stag, Himilayan thar, chamois) and no "trophy fee" will be added. Goats, pigs, and fallow deer are also a possibility. Both 5-day and 9-day durations are available. Keep in mind, weather ("clag") can have a significant impact. Longer duration hunts increase opportunity and allow adaptability to on-the-ground conditions.
- 2 guide to 1 hunter hunts, or 2 guide to 2 hunter hunts
